I'm not saying I agree with it. I was just telling you what it says on the back of my box. Well, AFAIK all GFW titles have that "Don't lend or make illegal copies of this disk" warning printed on them. Hell, I've got a *demo* copy of LOTR: Online here that has that warning. Guess what the box insert says! "Give your friend this code and lend them this disk." EDIT: (just so I don't have to double post), Another reason I really love Steam: It means that I don't have to worry about keeping track of all my product serials. Seriously, I just spent half a bloody hour finding the booklet (and serial) for my copy of UT3, and a bunch of time before that trying to find what it bloody looks like (so I knew what I was looking for). Also, I had to copy the bloody disk to my bloody HD and modify the bloody .MSI so that it wouldn't give me a bloody error when I tried to install. When I read the bit I deleted out of the MSI, it would appear that it was set to error out on anything other than XP/Server2003/Vista. Why they didn't think to include Server 2008 (when they included Server 2003) is beyond me....

Changing the subject slightly. Does anyone use the media share/pc link aspect of the 360? I have been using it quite a bit so I can carry on using my laptop whilst streaming to my tv. However, as I am sure you are all aware it has some shortcomings such as only being able to play certain video formats (not just WMV, they have a patch for more now). However, I have found some great FREE media streaming software that transcodes as it goes (It sort of buffers it). Anywho, it also allows you to play certain media streaming websites such as youtube, google video etc. So you can basically play some urls onto your 360 which is pretty cool for watching trailers. Anywho give it a try it seems to work pretty damn well but it is system hungry when it transcodes. tversity.com/

AaRoNChRiSt Been playing:Far Cry 2 COD 5 Fallout 3 Funnily enough, I've been playing all three of those too.... Except on PC. COD5 is the only one I've completed a complete play-through in... FC2 I'm around a third of the way through (if the progress % in save-games is to be believed that is)... And in Fallout 3 (which I have for both PC and 360) I'm not very far into due current savegame being a bit crash-happy where it is right now. I've gotta find out what's causing it to lockup.... As for transcoding, my CPU is a bucking FEAST. 20-28 GFLOPS. Also, try hitting up "BTC Brin" on Live.

No pr0n on the desktop; It's a bit of a personal thing that I don't care to explain. The laptop is a total pr0n-box though.... Also, the only live titles I have installed (AFAIK) are Fallout3 (No idea why this has live; Does it have multiplayer?) and the Dawn of War II MP Beta..... Overall, I'm not too impressed with the performance of Live; It's too fucking lagtasticular -- the whole non-centralized nature of it means that you're going to have latency problems in 9 out of 10 games you play (for which you do straight up matchmaking). The only times I've played and *not* had latency-based lag issues (I.E. someone who wasn't me was lagging) are when I've hosted; Fiber kicks ass.

Well, keep in mind that that was my experience with GFWL for the Dawn of War II MP BETA, so it may not be indicative of the service as a whole. I haven't played it MP in awhile, but the one thing that does seem to have carried over from the BETA is how fucking long it takes to do matchmaking. Seriously, I've sat there for 3-5 minutes waiting for it in the past, and that isn't that much of an anomaly. I wish they hadn't gone for the GFWL BS. That said, the GT I posted higher up does work on my xbox, so hit it up when you get the chance. Also, does anyone know how to search for a live user by email address?

Well then grab tversity. It makes your 360 into a pretty decent media extension. yeah, I have this, I'm still working on getting the Transcoder to work properly, and I want to see if I can use it to create a media steaming server that I can access remotely... Digits, I recommend trying it, its a good program. Also, Leo can I have your PC specs? The Transoder isn't working very well, but I think it may be because my computer is a POS.

I'd think about it, but I don't really plan on using my xbox as a mediacenter box in any case. My current plan is to get a Dell 2709W monitor (inputs: HDIM, displayport, 2x DVI, component HD, 5.1 audio passthrough, USB hub, cardreader), and set up in my room, using it for both my xbox and PC. In that case, I don't really see why I'd want to bother trying to stream to the xbox when I can just watch it on the bloody PC in the first place. Anyway, I see that none of you (save Fearless Leader) have hit me with a friend request. See my post above for GT. Also, about finding a GT for a given email address? Anyone know how to find the GT bound to a given email addy?

Well, if you have a MSN account, and you sign into the account via your Xbox, anyone on your MSN contacts list that has a Xbox Live account should be added. Not sure about finding them any other way though...

The transcoding goes a little slow on certain file types. It sometimes has to buffer a lot more than usual. So far the worse thing I have played was an episode of Battlestar Galactica which buffered about 5 times throughout the episode. The buffering only lasted a minute tops, but having that pop up every 10 minutes was annoying. Apart from that, everything else has never been more than 30 seconds of initial buffering at the start and so on.

Yeah, I imagine most transcoders/encoders hate RM. file. My tversity only buffer when using certain mkv formats. I believe it encodes a little for mp4. files etc but the software doesn't visibly struggle with that at all.

(BTW, I use Real Alternative Codec when playing them on my PC, the classic Media Player that it comes bundled with kicks the shit outta VLC) Anyone know of a good freeware converter?

Dude, VLC kicks ass. Don't dis it or I shall have to ask you to STEP OUTSIDE! Whoa, I'm not dissing VLC, I <3 that VLC, but it isn't without its pitfalls, like constantly freezing when you try to skip over some of the video, or the two second response time it takes to pause the video. CMP just runs, so much smoother than VLC (Plus the GUI is more Full screen Friendly) but I still use VLC for those files that CMP wont open.

CMP just runs, so much smoother than VLC (Plus the GUI is more Full screen Friendly) but I still use VLC for those files that CMP wont open. I find that VLC sometimes can get a bit unresponsive on my laptop, so what I do to resolve it is change the priority level that the VLC.exe process runs at from normal to high (one below realtime). This means that it gets first dibs on processor time and all other apps take what it doesn't use. To do this open task manager, open the processes tab, find VLC.exe, right click it, then go to the submenu for "Set Priority" and set it to High. Try that before you assume that VLC is the problem...

Dude, your insulting my intelligence. What? You think I wasn't already doing that? I have tried everything in the book to try to get VLC to run smoother (Including, but not limited to, screwing with the registry, overclocking, modifying Priority, using lower resolutions, etc) to little to no avail. Now, this may be because the primary computer I use it on is my 900MHz Asus EEE 701 Netbook (Although I get the same glitches on my desktop, just to a lesser extent). Simply put, even after I do everything there is to optimize VLC, CMP STILL runs better than it right out of the box, and I can run background apps without worrying about lag. With that said, most of my friends are hardcore VLC fan boys that swear they have never had any problems with it. Ever. So don't take my experience to heart. Now, I kinda regret derailing this entire thread, can we get back on topic now?

Try Super, converts pretty much anything. There are a lot of options to play with, but I am sure you can figure them all out. There are media output presets etc, but sometimes they just refuse to work. www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html

Dude, your insulting my intelligence. What? You think I wasn't already doing that? Sorry then. Most of the people I've talked to haven't ever thought of changing the priority level that their software runs at, so I never assume (for the most part) that people I talk to have ever done that. As you say you're running on an ASUS EEE, I'm thinking that your problem may be the SSD compounded by the slow processor. SSD's *can* be extremely fast, but that usually only the SSD's that cost more than most/all EEE PCs (E.G. this). Also of note is that I can't really see how RAID would significantly improve performance of a drive like the one I linked to....

Hmmm, solid state is looking more and more like the future of storage. The read/write speed of flash seems to increase in leaps and bounds.

Hmmm, solid state is looking more and more like the future of storage. The read/write speed of flash seems to increase in leaps and bounds. It isn't there yet. Currently I have a FOUR HDD RAID 10 array (Two 2-disk RAID 1 arrays RAID 0'd together) and my performance and cost is close to that of a single 32GB SLC SDD. Oh, and I've got over 1.8 TB useable space... Another reason I'm staying FAR away from flash is because of the options for recovery -- It's such a new technology that we don't have good software readily available to recover data from iffy disks like we do for HDD's (google SpinRite 6), if that is even possible. If you've ever seen an SSD crash, it isn't pretty. Basically what I'm saying is that for SSD's to go mainstream, the lower-performance ones need to get to at least a 2:1 ratio with standard HDD's.....
