For some nerds, firearms and martial arts are part of the identity. ESR* is the cannononical example there (spelling pun intended). I assure you that I'm quite nerdy, despite my 7 years of armed combat training and honest-to-goodness female wife. *If you don't know ESR, go to Google, type "ESR," and hit "I'm feeling lucky."

Seeing you guys I must say you are all very militaristic. where are the good old ners you see with most games? Pretty much all of the nerds I know are "militaristic"... some nerds, I suppose, don't mind being shoved around by the jocks, but my group used to protect the wimpy nerds during lunch and whatnot, back in the mid-eighties at Clovis High... and woe to he who tried to give me hell for being in the Boy Scouts! Some idiots never really realized just how many of us there were... and we get trained in things like survival and marksmanship, and working together, and beating the crap out of Scout-haters... oh wait, that wasn't part of the official curriculum...

Yep. That's him. Just check the firearms section on the main page or the blog. Besides being a gun nut, he wrote "The Cathedral and the Bazaar" and was instrumental in convincing Netscape to go Open Source / Free. He's the manic libertarian (self-) publicist of Open Source. Not uniformly popular by any means, but certainly well-known and very nerdy. How many people out there are the first Google result for their initials?
Update: Akin, that's awesome.

Yeah :)
I wasn't making a point, it's just that your post reminded me of something they did on a Linux radio programme: "Open Source Street Fighter", where they were discussing would win in a fight: RMS or ESR.
I can't remember who they decided on, but I think it was ESR ('cause of his guns) :)
/me Aypok is really into the whole open source scene, incase that wasn't obvious :)

I kinda figured you were. That's pretty funny. That would've been a good Celebrity Deathmatch, although nobody would've gotten it.

It's a comic strip about what it would be like if RMS, ESR and Linus Torvalds lived together :) It's not hilarious (as some claim), but it is good for the odd laugh :)

Hmmm. I'm a nerd now in the 90s/00s high school system and let me tell you I have NEVER met a militaristic nerd of the sort you describe. Al the nerds in my town are of the stereotypical sort. Heck I'm the olny Boy Scout nerd in my high school. I am the most militaristic nerd in my high school and I pale in comparison to what you're describind and what I'm seeing here. However I must say that I would be jubilent to meet any nerds going around beating up scout-haters. I can't count how many idiot jocks hate the Boy Scouts in my school. Not to mention I can count all the nerds in my school on two hands... Most people are incapable of beleiving beleifs which differ from their social environment. Most people are incapable of even forming such beleifs. -Albert Einstein-

Trust me, I'm not even the most combat-oriented nerd I know. A buddy of mine from the chess and academic teams in high school makes me look like a pansy, and many of the best martial artists with whom I've trained in college are also hard core nerds. If you're in high school, you ain't seen nothing of nerd power yet. I assure you that this comic is quite accurate: www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/10/28

I wouldn't consider myself to be a nerd, but people say I'm pretty smart. And I do love guns. I just bought a 12 gauge Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag shotgun, and a Ruger Mini 14.

And hell...I was such a nerd I JOINED THE MILITARY. Being in the Air Force, I don't get to shoot that often, but I do get to have F-117s fly over my car 1-2 times a week...
